Daniel Biechele, Great White's former manager, plead guilty on Tuesday to 100 counts of involuntary manslaughter for his role in the February 20, 2003 fire at The Station in West Warwick, RI. In his allocution to the Court, Biechele admitted he ignited the fireworks that started the fatal fire without the requisite permits. Sparks from the explosions ignited flammable soundproofing foam that coated the walls causing flames to spread throughout the entire building.
Biechele further claimed he received permission for the pyrotechnic display from the club's owners, Jeffrey and Michael Derderian. The Derderians, who have plead not guilty to criminal charges, deny being aware that Great White would use any pyrotechnics much less consenting to their use. Rhode Island Attorney General Patrick Lynch has not ruled out calling Biechele to testify against the Derderians at their trial.
Under the terms of the plea bargain, Biechele will serve no more than ten years in prison. Families of the deceased have expressed disapproval for the terms of Biechele's deal, feeling that a maximum of 10 years for 100 deaths to be an insufficient penalty. Biechele will be sentenced on May 8.
