Why the Grammys Matter

We all saw the press headlines on how American Idol outdrew the Grammys in the ratings last week. But, USA Today reports that Grammy Winners like U2 and John Legend scored big time where it counts after the show: record sales. USA Today says:

After performing and snagging all five trophies it was up for, U2 saw its 2004 album, How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, return to the Billboard top 200 at No. 49 with 27,000 copies, a 512% jump.

...

Best new artist John Legend's Get Lifted rose 779%, the highest of any Grammy nominee, selling 52,000 copies to surge to No. 18 from No. 187.

The article also says that Alison Krauss, Gorillaz and Green Day were also among the winners seeing increased sales. Perhaps smaller label artists like Delbert McClinton will get a boost as well.
