Idol's Daughtry a copycat?

The multi-platinum selling and York, PA bred band Live had long ago incorporated a version of Johnny Cash's "I Walk the Line" into their live (no pun intended) show. The other night on American Idol, Chris Daughtry did a version that some claim is way too similar to Live's take on the country classic. Daughtry was heavily praised by Simon Cowell for the performance (video here).

Live's version was originally recorded in 2001 for a compilation cd and appeared on Awake: The Best of Live, which came out in 2004. Yet, Daughtry was praised for "making the song his own" by Simon and the other judges. Daughtry did not mention Live's version during his exchange with the Idol judges. The "rocker" has been favored to win the competition as of late and it will remain to be seen whether this "homage" to Live will be viewed negatively among Idol voters.

Comments:
Chris is not my favorite but I have to take up for him here. His web site list Live as a major influence so I am not surprised this sounds similar to there version. It would have been nice for him to give credit to them like he did the chilli peppers on a earlier show but who can say what is going thru his head or what is edited on the show. Also what is the difference between him doing a version of Live's walk the line and one of the other contestants copying a version of a song commonly heard on the radio? I liked it and made me want to listen to my old Live!!

Chris is one of my favourite contestants. He knows how to sing and make people happy and cheerful. I believe he should be the next American idol because he is the best. All his rocksongs he sang, if he had released one of them he would make a fortune....:)
He is so talented and serious, he is the one who makes his own song come to life. Good job Chris!! Kelly is cool too, and so is Katherine. wow

Chris Daughtry Fansite - Chris sings his way and even if he did copy Live, he still sang it way better than them.
