Calexico, Cake and X have reportedly been approached to take part in a Los Angeles based benefit concert for former Love frontman
Arthur Lee. The 61 year old singer has been diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and, despite undergoing chemotherapy, likely requires future treatment, including a possible a bone marrow transplant.
Lee blended psychedelic rock and folk music, the two predominant styles of the late sixties, to create Love's seminal 1967 album,
Forever Changes. Close to thirty years later, the album still shows up on many Top 100 album lists and "A House Is Not A Motel" has made regular appearances in Robert Plant's set list and is recently being covered in concert by Jack White's new supergroup project The Raconteurs.
The effort to raise money for a fellow musician's medical care is not without precedent. In 1993, Soul Asylum, Pearl Jam, Lou Reed, Michael Penn and others came together to record
Sweet Relief: A Benefit For Victoria Williams to assist the singer/songwriter after she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis while having no insurance.
Los Angeles booking agent Liz Garo and representatives from Spaceland Productions, The Agency Group and Delmore Recording Society are undertaking the effort to organize the benefit concert and are targeting a concert date of late May or early June.
