Comedian Stephen Lynch hits Broadway

By: Adam Carroll

Fresh off the success of The Craig Machine, Stephen Lynch, the clever and lyrically notorious guitar stand-up, stars in the Broadway musical The Wedding Singer. John Waters (who brought the colorful Hairspray to life in 2005) appears to have another screen-to-stage hit up his sleeve with this conversion of Adam Sandler's 1998 hit film.

Lynch fits the role to a "T", although this is his first Broadway appearance. I mean, who else could fit in Sandler's parody-singing shoes other than his apparent successor (and in my opinion America's top singing comedian) Stephen Lynch. Their similarities are striking with their high pitched yet soothing melodies. But, Lynch's audience seems to stretch beyond the high school walls, into college campuses and stick with fans post graduation. Having experienced a show at the Orpheum in Boston during his latest tour in October of last year, it was more than obvious that Stephen Lynch enthusiasts were a diverse type. From the die-hard, pimple ridden, T-Shirt wearing teenagers to the 35 year old "I just got off of work, so what the hell" crowd, he was more than well received.

Signed to What Are Records?, a top-notch independent record label with the likes of David Wilcox, Fancey and Broadway composer David Yazbek, Stephen Lynch has opted to stay indie and hasn't budged. He has been offered the "bigger and better," but Lynch and the gang at WAR? continue to get, well, bigger and better. Rob Gordon, president of WAR? says, "Stephen and his manager are happy with our quality of work. He gets all the attention he could ask for and our career development plan is working. Why make a change?" This seems to be a consensus that is widely shared among their artist roster.

Lynch has three albums, a "Live At The Rey" DVD and a Comedy Central Presents special. At 34 with a formidable career already under his belt, it makes one wonder, "What's next?" The New York Times put him as the "One To Watch" for their actor review in February. We'll just have to do the same and watch this ever evolving talent. Previews for began March 30th and opening night is April 27th.

[Ed. Note Adam Carroll was an intern at WAR?, but is no longer affiliated with the label].
