Great Britain's Uncut magazine named
The Velvet Underground and Nico, which will celebrate its 40th anniversary next year,
the greatest debut album of all time. Bearing an Andy Warhol designed cover, the VU's 1967 album has made up in influence what it lacked in overall sales. Brian Eno summed the album up best: "Only a thousand people bought the first Velvet Underground album, but all of them went on to form a band."
Fellow New Yorkers Television scored the number two album with their debut
Marquee Moon; The Jimi Hendrix Experience's
Are You Experienced came in at number three. While creativity reigns in the music on the albums in the top ten, it didn't spread to the titles. In addition to the simply named
Velvet Underground & Nico, The Stone Roses (#4), The Clash (#6), Led Zeppelin (#7), Roxy Music (#9) and The Stooges (#10) all had their self-titled debut albums make the list.
The Band's
Music From Big Pink and Joy Division's
Unknown Pleasures round out the top ten.
