The Eagles Sell Out

In one of the most hypocritical business deals in recent memory, The Eagles will make Long Road Out Of Eden, their first studio album in almost 30 years, exclusively available at Wal-Mart stores throughout North America. The deal pairs up longtime environmentalist Don Henley with a corporation known for its disdain of environmental laws and regulations. The latest album berates Americans for their consumerism and rampant big business, so I guess this is a case of do as Don Henley says not what Don Henley does.

"Some of my environmental friends are a little upset because we made this deal. But on the other hand, I have a direct line now to the CEO of Wal-Mart," said Henley. "We’re certainly making our feelings known in terms of ecological stewardship and some of the practices of big business that are undesirable and wasteful." If Don Henley thinks anyone at Wal-Mart truly cares about his opinions, the judgmental rocker may have finally gone bereft of his senses. Fortunately, he can rest easy on his mountain of Wal-Mart cash.

Comments:
It is easy for cynics like “Schultz” to sit out there in the dark and throw stones at big targets – especially if they aren’t concerned about the facts. Obviously, the anonymous “Schultz” hasn’t done his homework and doesn’t know or care what Wal-Mart is doing to change not only its own footprint but those of other major corporations, both here and abroad. The Eagles and their management are, in fact, in constant communication
with people at the highest levels in the Wal-Mart hierarchy and policy discussions are ongoing. Neither Don Henley nor his bandmates have any delusions that they are the catalysts or the movers behind Wal-Mart’s new green initiative. Wal-Mart had decided to take these steps BEFORE the Eagles signed a deal with them. Mr. Schultz’s comments are slanted and hyperbolic. And since he’s tossing around the word, “hypocritical,” does he really expect anyone to believe that the major record labels – and the global conglomerates to which they belong – treat the earth or their employees any better than Wal-Mart. Is he holding the major labels up as an example of righteous business practices and environmental stewardship. Hypocrisy, indeed.

The Eagles are proud of the fact that their fans are going to get 20 brand new songs for $11.88 – and nowhere on that album are the Eagles telling anyone to do as they do. Unlike Mr. Schultz, Don Henley and company are living in the real world. They are part of a growing movement to eliminate waste – their new CD package contains 30% recycled materials and a stamp of approval from the Forest Stewardship Council – and no plastic jewel box. They are also in the use and the promotion of biofuels, sustainable forestry and, with Wal-Mart, the use of sustainable fibers in clothing.

So, Schultz should do his homework and play fair or shut up. It’s really not that difficult – just go to www.walmartfacts.com.

Anyone want to bet greengirl850 is a WalMart employee.

As for being uninformed, start with the documentary Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Prices. Then, take note of the lawsuits involving Wal-Mart locking their employees in overnight. Then, take a look at their virulent anti-Union practices. That's just for a start.

That's just their business practices. How about their censorship of artists and music that don't meet their idea of "family values?"

The Eagles should be ashamed to jump into bed with Wal-Mart and deserved to be called out on the carpet for doing so.

"to sit out there in the dark"....Schultz did you forget to pay your electric bill again?

And, wait, is this Walmart person correct that your name really isn't Schultz?!?! And what is this about you not living in the real world? Is there some alternative world you're not telling me about? Wait, it's not that model world George Costanza stumbled into? You better not be holding out on me!

well, like the song says http://www.realcrash.com/make-it-sleazy-say-eagles/, or take it easy too. It's not that bad, the environment has always been a chimera. Maybe it doesn't really exist.
