Decemberists Tour; Michael Jackson wins, Adam Lambert shocks and Britney Spears proposes?
The Decemberists are currently featured on Current TV's "Embedded" - which if you haven't seen yet is a great show on an equally cool network. The show has some exclusive rehearsal and live footage along with interview clips from the band. Check it out here and for those "down under" you can buy Decemberists tickets for their January Australian tour dates here.
Adam Lambert though may have stolen Michael Jackson's four award thunder from the American Music Awards with his "man on man" kiss. The former American Idol runner up has the morality police up in arms over his "offensive" behavior and the complaints are rolling in to ABC. Same sex kisses are nothing new to awards shows as we all remember the famous liplock and tounge swap between Madonna and Britney Spears. Speaking of...
Britney Spears has been rumored to be dating agent Jason Trawick and now the story takes a new twist. The Herald Sun is "reporting" that Britney asked Jason to marry her but he turned down the proposal to be Mr. Spears number three. Who knows if this is true but it has been awhile since Britney has been flashing photogs around Hollywood so maybe she was trying to settle down. Oh well, if he did turn her down, maybe we'll see more Britney Sprears threesome videos!
The Watson Twins made a name touring and recording with indie sweetheart Jenny Lewis. The partnership was helpful to both sides and the ladies made some great music together. But, the Watson Twins inevitably evolved into a headline act in their own right. With a deal from Vanguard Records, Chandra and Leigh Watson have logged thousands of road miles in support of their EP Southern Manners (2006) and their full length effort Fire Songs (2008). Earlier this spring, the ladies stopped into Memphis to tape a performance for Sun Studio Sessions. Here is the first release from the taping, "Only You."
Sun Studio Sessions will begin airing as a regular half hour series distributed to PBS stations nationwide beginning January 2010. The Watson Twins will be featured with their own half hour show during Season One. Meanwhile the ladies will get back on the road this fall, tour dates are available on their MySpace page.
This week's Philadelphia live shows kick right off on Monday night at Kung Fu Necktie with a triple header bill of Serpent Cult, Gates of Slumber and Zoroaster. KFN follows up the next night with The Warlocks and Morning After Girls. Tuesday night also sees both Parachute and the Script at World Cafe Live.
Wednesday night presents a few different options. Aushua Blockley is at the Pourhouse, Franz Nicolay of Hold Steady fame is playing First Unitarian Church, NOMO is at the M Room and the Tin Angel welcomes Julian Velard.
Thursday night is ladies night (or tough chicks pretending on your perspective) at the Electric Factory as Akron's own Chrissie Hynde and the Pretenders along with Juliette Lewis will be in town.
Friday night sees Pitbull takeover the waterfront at Penn's Landing, while Brookville and Trashcan Sinatras hole up in the Tin Angel. For those looking for some indie folk head on over to the North Star for Baltimore's Wye Oak.
Saturday night is filled with concerts all around town. Allison Weiss and Bess Rogers are at Tin Angel and Bill Harley is across town at World Cafe Live. Camp Kill Yourself invades South Street at the Fillmore and six time Grammy winner John Legend is at the Mann Center for Performing Arts. Looking back downtown, you can check out Lelia Broussard at Tin Angel or Spencer Day over at Chris' Jazz Cafe.
For the energetic who want to squeeze one more show in before the work week starts again you can catch Band of Skulls at the North Star.
The Kings of Leon have officially gone from indie rock favorites to full blown mainstream rock stars - not that there's anything wrong with that! Having now sold over a million copies of Only By the Night and played the Today show, the young band of brothers (and a cousin) have more than hit the big time.
The band is taking the show back on the road, kicking things off at Lollapalooza and doing 30 or so US dates this fall including the Austin City Limits festival. Beyond the concerts, Kings of Leon will also play on The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien on August 24th.

New York City is always full of great concert options. This week is no different and the week gets off to a fast start with the Arctic Monkeys at the Highline Ballroom. Bela Fleck is playing Central Park Summerstage with Toumani Diabate, while Madison Square Garden hosts Depeche Mode with Peter, Bjorn & John.
The Arctic Monkeys stay on the island Tuesday night to play Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, which of course, also has house band the Roots. Incubus supplants the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall while Los Campesinos takeover Webster Hall. Tuesday night also has a replay of Depeche Mode with Peter, Bjorn & John at MSG.
Wednesday night sees Chris Isaak at the Beacon Theatre and Incubus does its second show at Radio City. John Scofield is at Madison Square Park while Joe's Pub hosts Julian Velard. Licorice and Rebecca Hart will play the Rocks Off Concert Cruise Series.
Thursday you can take to the water with Donna The Buffalo for a Rockin' the River Cruise. Alternatively, the Eagles of Death Metal will rock the younger set at Webster Hall while the old school crowd can catch legendary crooner Johnny Mathis at the Beacon.
Friday things start off early with Jason Mraz playing the Today Show Concert Series while Friday night, the Big Takeover Band will be snuggling into the much more intimate Rockwood Music Hall. Lila Downs and Me'Shell N'DegeOcello are at Lincoln Center while Sugar Ray visits Irving Plaza (Fillmore). Grace Potter & The Nocturnals and Deer Tick will play "Celebrate Brooklyn," a free show in Prospect Park.
With everyone likely heading to the Hamptons, Saturday night is fairly quiet in the Big Apple. Pilobolus is at the Joyce Theater, Sam Bradley is at Joe's Pub and Love will play B.B. King's. U-Melt livens things up with a gig at Sullivan Hall.
The weekend comes to a close with a Webster Hall triple header featuring Serpent Cult, The Gates of Slumber and Zoroaster.
Monday's Earful: 30... 25... 20 Years Later.... The Songs Literally Remain The Same (As The Album At Least)
By: Rinjo Njori
Judas Priest, Steve Wynn & the Miracle 3,Public Enemy, Aerosmith, Motley Crue, the Pixies, ASIA and the Boss all have or will trot out tours, mini-tours, or homecomings celebrating their musical legacy. This nostalgia trip has taken a new form in the last couple of years- performing one specific album from their catalogue (usually on the album's anniversary) from beginning to end. After 30 years Judas Priest are treating us to British Steel. Steve Wynn (Dream Syndicate) took his Miracle 3 lineup to LA and NYC to treat us to the 25th Anniversary of Dream Syndicate's Medicine Show. To rationalize another Pixie's tour, Black Francis and the gang will play Doolittle. Once a gimmick of cover bands (see Judas Priestess, etc.), hardcore punk bands (e.g. Killing Time, Minor Threat) and Phish's annual Halloween concert (covering Talking Heads, The Beatles, etc) most fans were never treated to a live version of an entire album from start to finish.
Somehow over the last few years this gimmick is suddenly becoming the way to celebrate the band's legacy, a singular point in time, and is a "treat" to fans. Sure, everyone's going to get excited when The Pixies open their hearts and mouths to the bass line that opens "Debaser" and backbeat of "Wave of Mutilation." After 45 minutes, are they going to shiver with anticipation for "Gouge Away?" "Heat of the Moment" essentially made Asia, but "Cutting it Fine" might inspire more than a few people to zone out. Realistically, the fans come to hear the songs they love and after 20, 25, or 30 years, playing the more obscure tracks is for the hardcore fan. Though the iTunes generation have pegged us as a music fan of the David Spade variety. During the Kevin Nealon era of Weekend Update he summed it up best, "I'm going to see Laura Branigan tomorrow night at Madison Square Garden, and, uh.. I have some advice for her: open and close with "Gloria." Do it a couple times in between, alright? Thank you very much!"
Philadelphia, coming off the Billy Joel and Elton John concerts this past weekend, is set for another full slate of great live shows this week. Tuesday night sees a triple header at Johnny Brenda's with Love, Sky Saxon and the Seeds and the Electric Prunes. On Wednesday the focus shits back across town with Edwin McCain at the World Cafe Live.
Thursday night has an all age show from Chairlift at the First Unitarian Church. For the older kids, WXPN favorite Donavon Frankenreiter plays the Fillmore at the TLA. Also, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros hit the World Cafe Live.
Friday night kicks off an amazing weekend of live show selections. The Eagles of Death Metal come to the Fillmore at the TLA, while Old Crow Medicine Show should fill up the Electric Factory. Indie hipsters can catch Scott H. Biram at Johnny Brenda's while the cannabis crowd will light up the water front hitting Penn's Landing for Slightly Stoopid, Snoop Dogg and Stephen Marley. If you want to sweat it out in a basement instead of outside, you can check out Love Language at First Unitarian Church.
If you want to get outside for a big show on Saturday night, Incubus and the Duke Spirit are at Penn's Landing or if you're looking for something more chill you can catch the always great Bonnie Raitt with the legendary Taj Mahal at the Mann. But, if prefer something more intimate then check out The Pernice Brothers at the Tin Angel.
The weekend comes to end with an outdoor homecoming show for G. Love & Special Sauce with Jason Mraz at Penn's Landing.
Assembly of Dust Tour Dates and Mp3 Download with Phish bassist Mike Gordon
AOD fans coming off the Gathering of the Vibes show last weekend will likely have to wait to mid-September to see the band again when the kick off their fall tour. Beyond the new tour dates, Assembly of Dust also has a new record out as well.

The Dodo's have a new "record" - Time to Die - coming out this September but the download version is already selling like hotcakes as they used to say in the old days. The third disc from the band, produced by Phil Ek (Built to Spill, Fleet Foxes, The Shins), is tearing up the Amazon download charts while the old fashioned "cd" version will hit the streets September 15th. The Dodos will also hit the streets shortly thereafter with a two month fall tour. The tour dates are all with New Zealands' Ruby Suns.

U2 paid tribute to Michael Jackson during their concert Tuesday night in Barcelona. The band dedicated the iconic "Angel of Harlem", originally written for Billie Holiday, to Michael and infused a medley of Jackson's "Man in the Mirror" and "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" into the end of the song.
Introducing the song, Bono described Michael as an "unspeakable talent." And, no Bono did not attempt to moonwalk - which makes sense, given there's not much water on the moon.
The Barcelona show, at Camp Nou stadium, drew over 90,000 fans and was the first of U2's 360 tour. The show set list featured several songs from "No Line on the Horizon and also included classics "One", "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "With or Without You." The tour dates continue through Europe this summer, with the first U.S. dates this September in Chicago.
Yonder Mountain String Band have announced a slew of summer tour and festival dates. The dates are a lead up the release of their latest studio record "The Show" due to hit stores September 1st. The end of the released dates include shows with Xavier Rudd and a few with the Dave Matthews Band.

Pawnshop Roses to host "Let it Roll" Festival; World Cafe Tonight
Taking a cue from moe and their now annually successful moe.down festival, the Pawnshop Roses are co-hosting their first annual "Let it Roll" Festival at Sunnyview Farm in Ghent, NY the weekend of September 18th and 19th.

Meanwhile, the Pawnshop Roses headline the World Cafe Live tonight in Philadelphia with special guests Justin Jones and The Morning Pages, starting at 8pm.
Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers: Sun Studio Sessions
Stephen Kellogg & the Sixers bring a unique approach to their music blending harmonies with acoustic folk rock with a funky edge. On tour this summer with Sugarland, the band also has a new album due out September 6th on Vanguard Records. As the Boston Globe described, "Kellogg's music is semi-gritty, melodic alt-country. Think early Wilco, Whiskeytown, or Tom Petty. Relaxed, yet passionate."
Here the band performs "4th of July" - a great example of their sound - live from Sun Studio:
You can hear more from Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers, along with learning tour dates on their Myspace page here.
Vienna Teng (subject of a recent Washington Post feature) is back out on tour in support of her new record Inland Territory. Paste Magazine describes the record as "a retro-minded release anchored in the legacy of Tori Amos [and] Sarah McLachlan." Not bad company!
For Inland Territory, Vienna once again teams up with Alex Wong for production and songwriting support. You can see this tandem in action here in this newly released video for "1 BD/BA" (One Bedroom / One Bath):
Vienna is playing tonight in Pittsburgh at Club Cafe Live before heading to Ann Arbor, Michigan for two nights at the Ark. You can get a complete list of Vienna's tour dates on her website.
Ray LaMontagne rolled into the Philadelphia area for the second time in support of his third full-length album, the solid and eclectic Gossip in the Grain. As usual, LaMontagne delivered an impassioned performance throughout that left his growing legion of fans heading for the exits with smiles on their collective faces.
Backed by bass, drums, and the multi-talented Eric Haywood on electric and pedal steel, LaMontagne effortlessly switched gears between rockers such as "You Are the Best Thing" and "Three More Days" to the electric blues and country-tinged numbers "Henry Nearly Killed Me (It's a Shame)" and "Hey Me, Hey Mama" to aching ballads like "Let It Be Me," "Shelter" and "Jolene."
LaMontagne's musical currency is soul measured by the ton, and nowhere was this more evident as when the band left the stage to allow LaMontagne to perform "Burn" as a solo act. When a man can silence a crowd of over 3,000 with just his voice and a guitar, he is entering rarified air usually reserved for the likes of legendary performers such as Jackson Browne and Jerry Garcia. As LaMontagne continues his ascent up the musical mountain, his soulful, scratchy voice, poignant lyrics, and memorable songs will provide many more such moments.
After rocking the Super Bowl halftime show, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band are ready to take the party across the country. Bruce was in great form last night rolling through a medley of "Tenth Avenue Freeze Out," "Born to Run," "Working On a Dream" and "Glory Days."
It was obvious that Bruce was having as much fun as the crowd. The band sounded great and looked ready for the road. Here's a current list of announced U.S. dates:
April 1 San Jose, CA HP Pavilion April 3 Glendale, AZ Jobing.com Arena April 5 Austin, TX Frank Erwin Center April 7 Tulsa, OK BOK Center April 8 Houston, TX Toyota Center April 10 Denver, CO Pepsi Center April 15 Los Angeles, CA Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena April 21 - 22 Boston, MA TD Banknorth Garden April 24 Hartford, CT XL Center April 26 Atlanta, GA Philips Arena April 28 - 29 Philadelphia, PA Wachovia Spectrum May 2 Greensboro, NC Greensboro Coliseum May 4 Hempstead, NY Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum May 5 Charlottesville, VA John Paul Jones Arena May 7 Toronto, ON Air Canada Centre May 8 University Park, PA Bryce Jordan Center May 11 Saint Paul, MN Xcel Energy Center May 12 Chicago, IL United Center May 14 Albany, NY Times Union Center May 15 Hershey, PA Hersheypark Stadium May 18 Washington, DC Verizon Center May 19 Pittsburgh, PA Mellon Arena May 21, 23 East Rutherford, NJ Izod Center
If for some reason you were one of the few people who missed the Super Bowl you can catch clips of Bruce's half-time show here.
Britney Spears may cancel her upcoming tour, reports TMZ. But, it is not because she's having a setback on her road to career redemption. The buzz is that Britney is trying to secure an agreement with ex-husband Kevin Federline to take the kids on the road with her and may not go without them if a deal is not reached in the near term.
As of now, tickets remain on sale for all of Britney's tour dates. Her "Circus Tour" is set to kick off March 3rd in New Orleans. We'll have to wait to see if it goes as planned. Why not just hire K-Fed as a backup dancer and make it all one happy family? Oh wait, you don't think that's what Kevin is thinking too do you...
Madonna just won temporary custody of her children and may be planning a move to the U.S. (to be closer to Alex Rodriguez?). But, Guy Ritchie won't get much of a break from seeing Madonna's name in the UK and European papers as she'll be back in the Old Country quite a bit in 2009 as her "Sticky and Sweet Tour" heads across the Atlantic.
Madonna will perform 20-25 shows overseas this year starting July 4th in London. Here's the list of dates released to this point:
July 4 London, ENG O2 Arena July 7 Manchester, ENG Manchester Evening News Arena July 11 Werchter, BEL Festivalpark July 14 Milan, ITA San Siro July 21 Barcelona, SPA Olympic Stadium July 23 Madrid, SPA Vicente Calderon July 28 Hamburg, GER Trab-Arena Hamburg Bahrenfeld July 30 Oslo, NOR Vallehovin August 4 Tallinn, EST Tallinn Song Festival Ground August 6 Helsinki, FIN West Harbour August 9 Gothenburg, SWE Ullevi August 11 Copenhagen, DEN Parken August 13 Prague, CZE Chodov Natural Amphitheatre August 15 Warsaw, POL Bemowo Airport August 18 Munich, GER Olympic Stadium August 20 Ljubljana, SLO Hippodrome
Paul Oakenfold will open for all the announced dates. The "Sticky and Sweet" tour grossed over $250 million in 2008, so it is not surprising to see Madonna extend it into a second year. That's more than even A-Rod makes!
AC/DC is about to wrap up a North American leg of their world tour in support of their latest release, Black Ice, with dates left in Tulsa, Little Rock, Memphis and Nashville before heading to Europe.
As the below video demonstrates, fans of all ages are still ready to ride the Highway to Hell - even if they can't sing as well as their heroes:
Most of the European shows are stadium venues and nearly all are sold out. AC/DC has some limited ticket availability for members of their fan club for select cities and as of the publishing time for this post there are tickets available for the Amsterdam show scheduled for June 29th.
Tickets for two recently added dates have yet to go on sale. AC/DC will release tickets for the Marseille, France (Stade Velodrome) show at 8:00AM Marseille time on January 27th and tickets go on sale for the Athens, Greece (OAKA Stadium) show on 10:00am Athens time on February 3rd.
AC/DC's European dates kick off at the Telenor Arena in Oslo, Norway on February 18th. You can get the full list of European dates on AC/DC's official site.
Katy Perry was certainly hot in 2008. Her song "I Kissed A Girl" was seemingly everywhere and she quickly shook off any notions of being a one hit wonder with the follow up single "Hot 'n Cold."
Now Perry will try to parlay last year's successes into a hit 2009 tour. After kicking off this weekend in Seattle, here are the upcoming U.S. tour dates.
01/25/2009 The Commodore Vancouver, Canada 01/26/2009 Crystal Ballroom Portland, OR 01/28/2009 The Fillmore San Francisco, CA 01/29/2009 The Empire Sacramento, CA 01/31/2009 The Wiltern Los Angeles, CA 02/02/2009 University of Arizona Tucson Tuscon, AZ 02/03/2009 Marquee Theatre Tempe, AZ 02/05/2009 House of Blues San Diego, CA 02/10/2009 In The Venue Salt Lake City, UT
Beyond out on tour, you can also catch Katy on television February 8th on the Grammys when she participates in "My Grammy Moment", where one aspiring performer (selected by fan voting) will get to sing with her. Whoever wins, they should be sure to wear some cherry chapstick! Just in case...particularly since Perry now says her celibacy "vow" was just a joke.
In between helping get Barack Obama elected President and getting ready for his upcoming Super Bowl performance, Bruce Springsteen has been readying his new record, the appropriately titled for the times Working On A Dream. While a big fan of most Springsteen studio records, the true magic from this man comes from his live performances. Seeing Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band (preferably somewhere in New Jersey) should be on any music fan's bucket list. Beyond the Tampa Super Bowl show, the U.S. tour plan has not been released yet. However, several European dates have been and for those across the pond who may not be easily able to make it to Giants Stadium anytime soon here are your upcoming chances to party with the Boss:
Tampere, FIN Ratinan Stadion June 2 Stockholm, SWE Stockholm Stadion June 4-5 Bergen, NOR Bergenhus Festning June 9-10 Munich, GER Olympiastadion July 2 Frankfurt, GER Commerzbank Arena July 3 Vienna, AUT Ernst Happel Stadion July 5 Herning, DEN Herning Messe Center July 8 Rome, ITA Olimpico Stadium July 19 Torino, ITA Palaolimpico July 21 Udine, ITA Stadio Friuli July 23
State Radio, who put on a great show, announced a string of tour dates for 2009 as well as one more show this year on December 26th at DC's 9:30 Club. You can get all the tour dates on their MySpace page and you can also download "Right Me Up" here.
Lex Land, who I had the pleasure of meeting earlier this year when she toured with Intelligent Noise label mate Joshua James, is giving away a download of her cover of Joni Mitchell's "River" - you can get it here. You can also download "As Much as You Lead" from her well received release Orange Days on Lemon Streethere.
Old Crow Medicine Show will perform on Conan O'Brien tonight. They'll likely do a song from their new release Tennessee Pusher. They also announced some springtime dates with the Dave Matthews Band on April 17 and 18 in Charlottesville, VA at the John Paul Jones Arena, and April 20, 2009 in Pelham, AL at the Verizon Wireless Music Center. They will also do some 2009 shows with The Felice Brothers, another band I look forward to seeing at some point.
Bonnaroo promoters have taken note of the economic crisis and are offering fans who buy tickets during their December "pre-sale" an opportunity to take advantage of a payment plan. An old school layaway deal if you will. Instead of shelling out $250 right now, you can lock in that "low, low" price and make five $50 payments (plus "fees" of course!). The ticket deal starts tomorrow and lasts through the end of the year.
No acts have been confirmed for the 2009 festival, but of course giants like Radiohead and Pearl Jam have anchored the lineup in years past so it's fairly safe to expect someone on that scale again. But, please folks no more Kanye!
Speaking of high priced tickets, Britney Spears promoters may want to take note of Bonnaroo's economic stimulus attempt as I hear seats for her upcoming show in Long Island, New York are in the $150 to $350 range (plus fees). And, that is from the authorized ticket sellers, let alone what the scalpers will try to get. At this rate, music fans will need a bailout not the Big 3! Or, maybe this is one are where the market forces of supply and demand will actually have an impact on price?
Britney Spears is in the midst of another great American comeback story. It's essentially a cliche now that we love the underdog and the comeback kids, particularly when you can combine both factors. There was a point in time, namely around the shaved head incident, that Britney Spears would have easily been voted the least likely pop-wreck to make a comeback. Recent successes make those somewhat recent days seem long ago.
Following an appearance on UK television on the X-Factor, (where she also celebrated her birthday a few days early), Britney unveiled her documentary "For the Record" on MTV, which drew in chunks of viewers for the network. Reports say the Spears special, which first aired on Sunday night, tripled MTV's ratings for that time period.
The timing couldn't be better for Britney, as concert tickets for her upcoming tour go on sale this week. That tour (full dates here) will truly let us know if Ms. Spears is indeed the comeback kid of 2009. The Pussycat Dolls will support Britney on the tour, which kicks off March 3rd in New Orleans.

Ray LaMontagne is doing a short run of mostly West Coast dates in support of his Gossip in the Grain release, that includes a fun ode to the lovely Meg White. Can a Jack White retort be far behind? If the gossip pages wrote about substantive artists, this would be front page "news"!
Beyond the new stuff, you can also catch Ray with some friends in Gov't Mule doing the Dylan classic "Masters of War" from a Red Rocks show back in 2004. If you buy the track, proceeds benefit HeadCount.org. Upcoming dates:
Nov 2 2008 Wiltern Theatre Los Angeles, California Nov 3 2008 Paramount Theatre Oakland, California Nov 5 2008 Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall Portland, Oregon Nov 6 2008 McDonald Theater Eugene, Oregon Nov 8 2008 Vogue Theatre Vancouver, British Columbia Nov 9 2008 Marion Oliver McCaw Hall Seattle, Washington
If you haven't seen Ray LaMontagne yet and live near one of these venues be sure to get out and check him out so you can see why he gets such ravereviews.
